Bruce Beaumont, a semi-retired teacher, and Peter Wake, a retired dental technician, are joint recipients of the Exceptional Seniors Award 2022 for their mentoring work with students at Macgregor Primary School. They are part of ACT Volunteers in Schools, a program which connects mature age volunteers to work with young people in schools.
Bruce and Peter work 1:1 with students once a week to design, problem solve and create shared structures and projects using Meccano. They have been able to build rapport and positive relationships with students, encouraging them to engage with school and become confident learners, developing their communication and problem solving skills. Their mentorship has assisted many children over many years, helping students to feel empowered to achieve far beyond what they thought possible.
