Wasn’t it exciting to have an Australian girl aged 14 win an Olympic Gold Medal!
It is a reminder of why Children’s Week is an important part of our calendar.
We aim to see that all Children have the opportunity to do their best and succeed in life with the talents they have, whether it be the arts and crafts, sport, music, academia, literature etc.
Article 24 of The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is one of the statements which is significant in enabling young people to reach their potential, and is the theme of this year’s Children’s Week: “That children have a clean and safe environment, good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so they will stay healthy”. The remainder of the Article reminds us that “Richer countries should help poorer countries to achieve this”.
In Canberra during Children’s Week we always recognise people who make a significant contribution to children by their volunteer efforts. It is a most important feature, and at the launch we have the opportunity to hear these stories.
As a community we are greatly indebted to those on the Children’s Week Committee who spend so much time planning and running the activities during what is much more than just one week.
Thank you.
